Language and Cognitive Development Lab

LCD Lab is an active research lab focused on conducting and disseminating research relevant to normal and atypical development in language, literacy, and numeracy.

We are engaged in various research topics related to understanding the cognitive and sociocultural factors that influence children’s and adolescents’ development across languages and cultures.

LCD Lab offers many opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to explore their own research interests, participate in a range of different projects, and develop their abilities as researchers.

Language Processing Laboratory

The Language Processing Lab is based in Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages and Brain and Mind Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. We are interested in language comprehension, production and learning. The lab has the following foci in research, among others. 

  • Interlocutor modelling in language production and comprehension
  • Handwriting literacy
  • Syntactic prediction

Cognitive Neuroscience of Language Laboratory

PI: Urs Maurer, Ph.D.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Our lab investigates neural mechanisms underlying language processing with a focus on reading acquisition, reading across cultures, and dyslexia. We are specialized on topographic analyses of EEG data, and use this technique in combination with eye-tracking and fMRI.

We provide research and evidence-based practices to children and adolescents at risk of language, literacy, and numeracy difficulties across languages and cultures.

Research Areas

Chinese Dyslexia

We contribute significantly in uncovering how we read Chinese words and dyslexia in the Chinese language.

Literacy Development

We continue to discover the developmental patterns of reading, such as teaching and learning methods.

Genetics and Brain

We investigate if patterns of reading and dyslexia can be inherited and if they can be the products of our nervous system.

Postdoc Positions

We house and mentor up-and-coming researchers to gain skills and experience that will prepare them for their academic career.

Student Opportunities
